FREE SHOW // 21+ // 1366 N MILWAUKEE AVE
Melding reverb soaked shoegaze with a subtle dose of ’80s pop & ’60s psychedelia, this five piece is adept at creating a groove and riding it into some strange and beautiful places.
Rumoured to be “demented instrumental acid-rock with robotic melodies that sound like party music from an episode of Doctor Who” or “a three-way tug-of-war between frisky, soulful garage rock, frenetic funk, and swaggering 70s proto-metal” – Protovulcan is actually just Deric Criss (Aleks and the Drummer, Walking Bicycles) on drums, Nicholas Ammerman (Fake Fictions, Advance Base) on guitar, and Will MacLean (formerly of Mercury Rev offshoot Variety Lights) on moog bass, wurlitzer, and vocoder. Our singer, Sue, still has not shown up for practice.
The Speed Babes
Speed Babes are lo fi garage punk recorded on iPhone in GarageBand featuring songs about numbers and colors and wanting stuff.
The band was started by Jesse Ewan when he foolishly said he could write and record an entire record by himself in under 24 hours that was just as good as a record being played at that moment by a coworker. (Debut record “Let’s Go Explode” was written and recorded in 18 hours – entirely in iOS GarageBand.)

In March of 2017, Speed Babes released “Yellow,” the follow up record to “Let’s Go Explode.” https://thespeedbabes.bandcamp.com/album/yellow
In March of 2018, Speed Babes released “Orangetape.”
